I Got Lip Filler and Wish Someone Had Warned Me About These 12 Things First

I Got Lip Filler and Wish Someone Had Warned Me About These 12 Things First

You spent three months scrolling TikTok before booking. You watched every "lip filler journey" video on YouTube. You think you know what is coming.

But, You don't. Not really.

Here are the 12 things almost nobody mentions before your first lip filler appointment that actually matter.

01The Numbing Cream Hits Different Than You Expect

They will apply a topical numbing cream and ask you to wait 15 to 20 minutes. Your lips will start to feel heavy, and avoid getting it in your mouth. Doing so, will make the process less painful.

02You Will Be Asked Questions That Feel Too Personal

Your injector is going to ask about your lifestyle, your goals, and even how you smile in photos. The more honest you are with your provider, the better your results. They may ask you to smile and hold it to get a better understanding of your facial mechanics.

A good provider needs to understand how you use your face before they change it. Answer honestly, even the embarrassing parts. Ask about Versa vs Kysse, as these two different lip filler products make a big difference. It's important to find out what's best for you.

03The First Pinch Is the Worst One

The initial injection is the one that may catch you off guard. Most people describe it as pressure plus a quick sting, not the sharp pain they expected. After that first pinch, the rest feels manageable.

Since most lip fillers now contain lidocaine, as your proceed, you'll feel less pain.

04You May Hear Your Own Lips

Yes, you may hear them. There is a faint squishing sound as the filler is placed and massaged into shape.

Nobody warns you about this. It is not painful, just deeply strange the first time.

First mid appointment lip check

05The Mirror Moment Mid-Appointment Is Wild

Most injectors will pause halfway through and hand you a mirror to do a mid mirror check to make sure both sides are even. Your lips may look uneven. One side will look done, the other will not.

Do not panic. This is intentional. They are checking symmetry before completing the second side. However, if you love how they look now, you should do a little more, as you will lose about 20% after the swelling subsides.

06Bruising Is Not a Sign of a Bad Injector

Even the most skilled injector cannot see every tiny blood vessel under your skin. Bruising happens. It does not mean something went wrong.

HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE

I can't stress this enough. Nurse Erika also gave me a pro tip: take Arnica pills the day before to help prevent bruising for 10 to 15 minutes afterward.

Avoid alcohol, fish oil, ibuprofen, and intense workouts for 24 to 48 hours before your appointment to minimize it.

07Your Lips Will Look Bigger Than You Wanted at First

This is the single most important thing nobody prepares you for. Immediately after lip filler, you have actual product plus swelling. Don't worry, your lips will go down as it settles.

Do not book your appointment three days before a wedding. Do not text your group chat freaking out at hour two. Wait.

08The Real Result Shows Up Around Day 14

Most of the swelling resolves in 3 to 5 days, but the filler keeps settling and integrating with your tissue for about two weeks.

If you are unhappy at day 3, give it until day 14 before making any decisions about touch-ups or dissolving.

No one actually prepared me for how your lips will look: uneven one day, less full another or super full. Give yourself the FULL two weeks before making any decisions; they are still settling. And of course HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE.

09You Cannot Drink From a Straw, Kiss, or Work Out for 24 Hours

Your injector will tell you this, but it does not really land until you are home, dehydrated, and reaching for a smoothie.

Plan your day. Prep food that does not require puckering. Cancel the gym. Skip the date night. You can't use a straw or suck for two weeks. This is HUGE, I noticed a difference when I accidentally did it a week in.

10The Aftercare Ice Trick Most People Skip

Ice in 10 minute intervals for the first few hours genuinely changes your recovery. Wrap a clean ice pack in a thin cloth and rest it gently against your lips.

Skip this and your day-two swelling will be noticeably worse. This is the cheapest, most effective thing you can do for yourself.

11A Great Injector Knows How Much You Need

If this is your first time, and you want more natural looking results. Many first-time clients get beautiful results from a full syringe, possibly two.

Make sure to do check ins with your injector during to see if it is the correct amount you want. Keep in mind your lips will go down 20%, so you may have to do a little more than you want, but with discussion with your provider.

12You Will Want to Go Back Sooner Than You Should

About three weeks in, once everything has settled and you have gotten compliments, you will start thinking about adding more.

Resist this. Lip filler typically lasts 6 to 12 months. Building gradually over multiple appointments produces better long-term results than chasing the high of that first big change.

What to Actually Bring to Your First Appointment

Bring unscented chapstick, a strawless water bottle, a hair tie, sunglasses for the drive home, and a photo of lips you find pretty. Not as a demand, but as a reference point for the conversation with your injector.

Skip the makeup. They are going to wipe it off anyway.

What to bring to your first lip filler appointment

The Bottom Line

Your first lip filler appointment is going to be more emotional than you expected, more comfortable than you feared, and the results are going to keep evolving for two weeks after you leave.

Trust the process. Trust your injector. And take selfies throughout the process. Keep in mind your real results show up Day 14.
